Daniyal Mueenuddin’s “In Other Rooms, Other Wonders” presses upon the socioeconomic conditions of Pakistan in the frame of short stories. The economic conditions of the society are at the backdrop of every character in Mueenuddin’s book, it guides their behavior as well as their attitude towards life. In the story “In Other Rooms, Other Wonders”, a character like Husna desires economic stability and joins the household of K.K Harouni, a wealthy landlord. The more she has the more she wants and her wants transform her into a woman who gives in her virtue for the comfort of a mansion. Marx’s ideas about working class and their psychology have been expounded upon to explain the story. Mueenuddin’s book “In Other Rooms Other Wonders” includes eight stories, the present paper sheds light on one of them. Economic conditions responsible for the degradation of values is studied in the paper through the lens of Marxism.
