Abstract

Dystopia, the anti-thesis of utopia is regarded as a place where human life becomes unbearable due to extreme situations like dictatorship, curbing of human rights, environmental disasters, violence based on race or gender etc. Though dystopian works of literature represent the dangers that may befall mankind in some remote future, they very much reflect the deplorable trends of the contemporary world and are cautionary tales in that respect. The nation state has the propensity to assume dystopian features and has been in recent times doing so. Leila and Ghoul, two web series movies from India, that were streamed on Netflix, the internet streaming site for movies, have examined the dangerous dystopian contours that the nation state can assume if not properly checked. The paper titled,Dystopian Nations and Desperate Rebellions: An Analysis of the Web Series Leila and Ghoul” traces the dystopian elements evident in the nation portrayed in the films. These include the erosion of individuality due to stringent uniformity, the creation of “otherness” and the punishment of deviants, the withering away of the civilian order and the institution of the family, the centrality of detention centres and so on. The ordeals that women have to face in the dystopian world are also considered in the paper. The desperate attempts of characters to thwart the dystopian tendencies and the staunch rebellion they put up offer the much-needed consolation and cause for hope.
