Abstract

Food is the basic necessity of human life. Our society gives high amount of importance to food and food related aspects of life as it plays an important role in our culture, personal identity and social origin. Food themes are common in all types of writing. Human being have the pleasure of reading and knowing about food and its related areas all around the World. Food is a frequently appearing theme in most of our childhood tales as it teaches more about the basic and complicated aspects of life. Many stories like Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate factory use food as a tool of temptation and as a weapon to use young minds to do things. The relationship of food with children is intimately and truly bonded. For children, the matter of food and stories are daily concerns. Food is an effective trigger of deeper memories of feeling and emotions of our internal body. This paper tries to cover the theme of food in children's literature and society majorly focusing on Alice's adventures in Wonderland and Charle and the chocolate factory as both are children's fictions that considers food as a major theme. This paper also aims to demonstrate the symbolic function of food in children's literature and social life.
