Abstract

Indian handloom textile industry is as old as humanity itself. Handloom has been a traditions and a craft handed down from generations to generations. The handloom industry is the most important cottage industry in India which has glorious past from the time immemorial. Historically, Weaving, especially of cotton fabrics has been the most important non-agricultural productive activity in the country. It was, and continues to be, primarily an artisan based activity. Handloom Weaving is the largest activity in the traditional sector, next only to agriculture. This entire article will give an early history of handloom industry in India. The history of handloom industry is continued and brought up to the recent period.
