Abstract

Poultry production business discharges a huge amount of chicken feather waste which not only leads to wastage of feather protein but also creates environmental pollution. These waste feathers contain a significant amount of keratin; can be consume by micro-organisms and present the alternative solution to its environmentally safe disposal. Microbial keratinases target the solubilization of strongly cross-linked, extremely rigid structural polypeptide keratin protein which is hard to degrade by the generally known proteolytic enzymes and have becomes biotechnologically important enzyme. The present study focus on isolation and identification a chicken feather degrading bacteria from poultry feather waste contaminated soil, and optimize the parameters to maximize the keratinase enzyme production followed by exploring the applications.
