Abstract

Famous author, literary chronicler and professor of literature, PerumalMurugan who writes in Tamil is the author of several novels, collection of short stories, anthologies, and non-fiction relating to language and literature. His writingcareer began with the publication of short stories in the Tamil journal Manavosaiwhich was later compiled and published in the work entitled Thiruchengodu. His novel dealt with themes of social relevance and is a mirror held to culture. Thenovel Madhorubhagantranslated by AniruddhanVasudevan as One Part Womandealt with the humiliation and sufferings a couple faces on the fact of being childless. The novel reflects the ancient cultural practice that prevails among thepeople living around Tiruchengode portraying the chariot festival ofArdhanareeswara, during which for one night in every year the local community inthe novel relaxes the social taboos and the men and woman would engage in freerelation.
