What Are the Akashic Records — And Why Does Every Soul Have One?

Somewhere, everything that has ever happened to you is still held.

Not in memory — memory is partial, selective, shaped by what the mind could bear to retain. Somewhere deeper. A living record of every choice made, every experience lived, every moment of genuine contact between your soul and the conditions of the life it chose to enter. This is not metaphor. Across every major wisdom tradition that has reached far enough into the interior, the same recognition surfaces: existence maintains a record. The soul's full history is not lost. It is stored in a dimension of reality that has been known, by various names, for as long as humanity has sought to understand what consciousness actually is. At shams-tabriz.com, this is the territory we return to — the understanding that you are not only what you currently remember. You are everything you have ever been.

That record has a name. It is called the Akashic Records.

 1. What the Akashic Records Actually Are

The Akashic Records are the energetic archive of every soul's complete experience — across every lifetime, every dimension of existence, every choice and consequence that has constituted the soul's journey through consciousness.

The word akasha is Sanskrit — meaning ether, or the primordial substance from which all physical reality emerges. In the cosmological understanding of the traditions that developed this concept, akasha is not empty space. It is the most fundamental dimension of existence — the field in which all experience is registered, preserved, and remains accessible to consciousness that has developed the capacity to receive it.

Different traditions have arrived at this recognition through different pathways:

Tradition

Name for the Record

Understanding

Hindu and Vedic

Akasha

The primordial ether holding all impressions of existence

Theosophy

Akashic Records

A cosmic library of all thoughts, feelings, and events

Sufism

Lawh al-Mahfuz

The Preserved Tablet — the divine record of all that is and will be

Christianity

The Book of Life

The record held in God's knowledge of every soul's journey

Buddhism

Alaya-vijnana

The storehouse consciousness retaining all karmic impressions

Kabbalah

Sefer ha-Chayyim

The Book of Life recording each soul's deeds and purpose

The names differ because the traditions that developed them emerged from different cultural contexts and different entry points into the same fundamental recognition. What they share — across centuries and continents — is the understanding that nothing of genuine significance is lost. The record exists. And it can be accessed.

 2. What the Records Contain

The Akashic Records are not a simple archive of events. They contain the full texture of the soul's experience — not only what happened, but the emotional reality within which it happened, the choices made at each turning point, the agreements entered into before incarnation, and the threads of purpose that run through the entire journey.

The soul's history across lifetimes. Every incarnation the soul has taken — the culture, the body, the relationships, the lessons pursued, the wounds formed and carried forward. This is the dimension most directly relevant to understanding patterns that cannot be accounted for by the current lifetime alone: the inexplicable fear, the instant recognition, the talent that arrived without apparent source.

Karmic patterns and their origins. The accumulation of cause and consequence across multiple lifetimes — the agreements made, the debts created, the relationships that carry weight from previous encounters. The Records do not hold karma as punishment but as pattern: the unresolved material that the soul has brought forward to meet again, in new conditions, with new capacity.

Soul agreements and pre-incarnation choices. Before each lifetime, the soul makes agreements — with other souls, with guides, with the conditions it will enter. These agreements are not fated in the sense of deterministic. They are the chosen curriculum. The Records hold the memory of what was chosen before the forgetting that incarnation requires.

The soul's blueprint and purpose. The unique configuration of gifts, capacities, and orientations that constitute this particular soul's nature — what it came here to express, to learn, to contribute. This is perhaps the most practically significant dimension of what the Records hold, and the one most directly accessible through a genuine reading.

 3. Why Every Soul Has One

The Akashic Records are not a privilege reserved for advanced souls or significant lives. Every soul has one — because every soul, without exception, is engaged in a genuine journey through consciousness.

This is worth sitting with. Not the dramatic life. Not the spiritually accomplished life. Every life — including the ones that appear, from the outside, to be unremarkable.

Why the Records exist for every soul:

  • Every experience generates impressions that become part of the soul's evolving understanding
  • Every choice, however small, contributes to the pattern that the soul is moving through
  • Every encounter with another soul creates a thread in the relational web that the Records maintain
  • Every lifetime adds to a body of experience that informs what the soul is ready to meet in the next
  • The record is not a judgment. It is a resource — available to serve the soul's continued development

The completeness of the Records reflects a specific understanding of how consciousness grows: not through dramatic leaps but through the accumulated texture of lived experience, in all its ordinariness and all its significance. Nothing is wasted. Nothing is irrelevant. The smallest moment of genuine presence is as fully recorded as the greatest crisis navigated.

The Records exist because the soul's journey matters — entirely, specifically, without exception.

 4. What Accessing the Records Makes Possible

The Akashic Records are not only a historical archive. They are a living resource — one that can be accessed in service of the present life's most significant questions.

What a genuine Records reading can illuminate:

  1. The origin of recurring patterns. The dynamic that keeps appearing in different people and different circumstances. The fear that cannot be traced to this lifetime's experience. These patterns often have roots in previous lifetimes — and seeing those roots changes the relationship to the pattern in ways that present-lifetime work alone cannot always produce.

  2. The nature of significant relationships. Why certain people carry unusual weight — why the connection feels older than the current acquaintance, why the difficulty between you has a quality of something unfinished. The Records hold the history of soul agreements that the current relationship is continuing or completing.

  3. The soul's purpose and gifts. Not as abstract spiritual language but as specific, grounded recognition of what this soul came here to express. This clarity tends to arrive not as information but as confirmation — the particular relief of of course, I always knew this.

  4. Karmic patterns ready for resolution. The accumulated patterns that have brought themselves forward in the current lifetime because the soul now has the capacity to meet and complete them. Understanding that something is ready is often the permission needed to begin engaging it directly.

  5. Choices and agreements made before this lifetime. The conditions entered, the relationships chosen, the specific challenges elected as the curriculum. This contextualises the life in a way that can transform the experience of difficulty from random suffering into purposeful engagement.

 5. How the Records Are Accessed

The Akashic Records are not accessed through the intellect. They are accessed through a specific quality of expanded, receptive consciousness — one that moves beyond the ordinary analytical mind into a register that can receive impressions at the level at which the Records operate.

The primary methods of access:

Guided meditative states. A practitioner trained in Records access uses a specific process — including an invocation, a meditative opening, and a quality of receptive attention distinct from ordinary concentration — to shift into the frequency at which the Records can be read. This is not trance. It is expanded awareness while maintaining clear consciousness.

Facilitated reading by a trained practitioner. For most people, access through a skilled reader is more immediately available than self-access, particularly in the early stages of working with this modality. The trained reader enters the Records on behalf of the person they are serving and holds the session in service of that person's genuine wellbeing.

Direct self-access through sustained practice. With training and consistent practice, many people develop the capacity to access their own Records directly — through a specific opening process, through meditation, through the quality of deep inner listening that sustained contemplative practice develops.

What genuine Records access feels like:

  • A quality of expanded, spacious knowing distinct from ordinary thought
  • Impressions and understandings that arrive with recognition rather than invention
  • Information that could not have been generated by the analytical mind from available data

What it does not feel like:

  • Dramatic visions or theatrical revelation
  • Absolute certainty about every impression received

 6. Common Misconceptions About the Records

These are worth clearing before they become obstacles to genuine engagement.

The Records are not deterministic. The soul's history, agreements, and patterns are held in the Records — but none of this constitutes a fixed fate. The Records describe what has been chosen and what is being carried, not what must inevitably occur. Free will remains fully operative at every moment.

Accessing the Records is not the same as a past-life reading. A Records reading may include information about previous lifetimes when relevant to the current life's patterns and purpose. But the Records are comprehensive — past-life information is one dimension of a much larger resource.

The Records are not a substitute for genuine inner work. What is revealed in a Records reading provides orientation and context. It does not, by itself, produce the integration that the soul's journey requires. What the reading illuminates, the inner work must embody.

Not every meditative impression is from the Records. The mind is capable of generating impressions that feel significant but originate in desire, fear, or imagination. Genuine Records access has a specific quality that distinguishes it from these — and developing this discernment is part of the practitioner's formation.

The Records are honest. They reflect what is genuinely there, not what is hoped for.

And that honesty is precisely what makes them worth accessing.

 7. What the Records Are Really Saying

The existence of the Akashic Records carries an implication more significant than any specific piece of information they might provide.

Nothing is lost. No experience — however painful, however brief, however apparently without consequence — is outside the record. The soul's full journey: the wrong turns, the abandoned paths, the moments of genuine contact with what is real, the failures of courage, the acts of unexpected grace. All of it is held, completely and without judgment, in a living archive that exists in service of the soul's continued becoming.

This changes the relationship to difficulty. If nothing is wasted — if every experience generates wisdom the soul carries forward — then the life currently being lived, in all its imperfection and incompleteness, is not a mistake to be corrected.

It is the curriculum the soul chose.

As more people access their Records:

  • The sense of the life as arbitrary or meaningless begins to dissolve
  • Recurring patterns begin to be understood as teachers rather than afflictions
  • Significant relationships begin to carry the weight of their full history
  • The soul's purpose becomes less an aspiration and more a recognition
  • The life begins to be lived from a deeper ground — one that extends beneath the current incarnation

You are not only what you currently remember.

You are the full, extraordinary, unrepeatable accumulation of everything you have ever been.

And that record — complete, unjudging, in service of your becoming — has been waiting for you to know it exists.
